Buenger's first published historical article is entitled "Secession and the Texas German Community: Editor Lindheimer vs. Editor Flake," in Southwestern Historical Quarterly in April 1979. In 1980, he published "Unionism on the Texas Frontier, 1859-61," in Arizona and the West. In 1994, Buenger wrote the article on the Texas oilman H.L. Hunt in Dictionary of American Biography.[7] In 2002, he penned "The Story of Texas: The Texas State History Museum and Memories of the Past," in Southwestern Historical Quarterly. The museum, located near the Texas State Capitol in downtown Austin, is named for former Lieutenant Governor Bob Bullock.[7]
In 2003, Buenger wrote the chapter on the colorful Texas politician Jesse H. Jones in the book Profiles in Power: Twentieth-Century Texans in Washington by the editors Kenneth E. Hendrickson, Jr., and Michael L. Collins. He was earlier the consultant and commentator of the 1998 documentary, Brother Can You Spare a Billion: The Story of Jesse H. Jones, which aired on Houston public television KUHT.[7])
