The Buengers, who reside in Bryan, Texas, have a son, Carl Davis Buenger (born ca. 1988), a mathematics major at Rice University. Their daughter, Erin Channing Buenger (June 20, 1997– April 9, 2009), died of neuroblastoma pediatric cancer at the age of eleven.[2]More than nine hundred mourners attended Erin's funeral at the First Presbyterian Church in Bryan. The mourners "came because they had lost a friend, a classmate, a teammate. They came because they had lost a fellow churchgoer, a fellow joke teller, a fellow animal lover, a fellow red-head. They came because in the words of Matthew Dahlgren: 'Erin made everyone feel like they had a special connection with her.'"[8]
U.S. Representative Chet Edwards, a Buenger family friend, successfully introduced legislation to earmark $150 million toward a cure for neuroblastoma and other cancers.
